Mathieu has always practised outdoor sports, including orienteering, multi-sport raids, mountain biking and climbing, in parallel with his handicrafts studies at secondary school in Auvergne. He came to trail running ‘quite naturally’. ‘I used to do quite a few small nature races’, explains Mat, 'and as where I come from, it's not very flat...'

After honing his cross-country skills, he went on to win the Youth Raid World Cup in 2014, and the following year earned a place in the French trail team. As an engineering student at INSA in Lyon (energy and environmental engineering), Mathieu is able to take advantage of special study arrangements to enable him to practise his sport at a high level.
